MUSIC TRIVIA:

Did you know…?

A very unique thing occured in Europe during the First World War. On Christmas Eve, 1914, lights began to appear along German lines on the western front. Then sounds of singing could be heard drifting across “no-man’s land” between the opposing trenches. As the British troops listened they began to recognize a familiar song. The Germans were singing…”Stille Nacht, Heilige Nacht…” which translates into english as “Silent Night, Holy Night.” The British in the opposing trenches responded by singing a British Christmas carol.

As Christmas day dawned some men stuck their heads out of the trenches. A German officer boldly walked across “no-man’s land” and was met by a British captain on the other side. They saluted each other and then decided to hold an unofficial truce between the two opposing armies to bury their dead. At one funeral the soldiers from both sides gathered together in “no-man’s land” to honor the dead by reading the 23rd Psalm.

At 8:30 am on December 26, after returning to the trenches, a British soldier put up a flag with “Merry Christmas” written on it. The Germans in the opposing trench replied by putting up a sheet that said “thank you.” Then the war was on again.

If you happened to be a member of the Beatles fan club between 1963-1969 you would have received a new Beatle record in the mail at Christmas time. Well, it just so happens that I was one of them!

I received a 45 record from John and Yoko Lennon one year called “Happy Xmas (War Is Over)” because I was following their campaign for peace.

Last December I had this song up on my blog, but you may not have known about that. So I thought it would be fun to share it with you today. And since it isn’t a “traditional” Christmas song, most of you will be able to enjoy it regardless of your spiritual beliefs.

Take advantage of this song to learn and practice chords or techniques you may not have tried before.
